The Sunday Ablution of Mandaeins on the Tigris River in the City of Amara / Southern Iraq
Several thousand Mandaeans, also called Al Sabaeans (religious minority in Iraq), are still living in southern Iraq today. Since Islam tolerates the Mandaeans as so-called „religion of the book“, they were a protected religious minority under Islamic law and were able to practice their faith. In more than 1800 years of history they have learned tolerance and a peaceful coexistence with the Muslim and Christian population of Iraq. Nowadays, the Mandaeans are intensively persecuted by Islamist circles who regard their religion as not condoned by Islam.
